- (1883-1946)actorBorn Jules Muraire in Toulon, Raimu as he is known, made his debut in cafés-concerts (1914) and gained notoriety for his creation of the role of César in marcel pagnol's Marius (1929), reprised in film in 1931. After the success of Pagnol's trilogy, Raimu appeared in a number of films, including those of marc allégret (Gribouille, 1937) and again of Pag-nol (La Femme du boulanger, 1938; La Fille du Puisatier, 1940), and of sacha guitry (Faisons un rêve, 1937). On the stage he played, at the comédie-française, the role of Argan in Malade imaginaire and M. Jourdain in Bourgeois gentilhomme (1944). Raimu was known for imparting his powerful personality to the characters he portrayed.
